Games and Web 2.0 : A Winning Combination for Millennials

Gaming and social networking define the millennial student while Web 2.0 tools provide the mechanism for inclusion into the curriculum. This presentation focuses on an evolving collaboration between two faculty members of different disciplines who merged the technology with game scenarios to infuse research techniques as integral components of math/computer science courses.   Blogs and wikis facilitated interaction beyond the traditional classroom while games provided the interest and incentive needed to improve information literacy skills and knowledge of the subject matter. Displays will include student work and responses, best practices and how the technology enhanced student expression and enthusiasm.

Gaming and social networking define the millennial student. Web 2.0 provides a platform that extends the classroom asynchronously.  This presentation focuses on an evolving collaboration between two faculty members of different disciplines who merged Web 2.0  and game scenarios to infuse research techniques as integral components of math/computer science courses.   These research skills are neccessary for today's student to meet the information challenges of the 21 st century.   Blogs and wikis facilitated interaction beyond the traditional classroom while games provided the interest and incentive needed to improve information literacy skills and knowledge of the subject matter.  Presenters partnered on game design, research assignments and discipline-related instruction.  Displays will include student work and responses, best practices and how the technology enhanced student expression and enthusiasm.  The methodology presented is applicable to all disciplines and adaptable to online, hybrid or traditional teaching modalities.

Additional justification

The presenters have incorporated blogs and wikis in over eleven sections of four courses in two years ranging from upper level calculus and computer science courses to general liberal arts mathematics courses.  Each implementation has one or more common thread of enhancing research skills, information literacy, teamwork and sharing.  In the all of the instances, the learning objectives, assignments and projects are easily adapted to other disciplines.  Recently, the authors have presented the learning objectives in a series of games designed to increase student interest and participation.  These games provide a storyboard where additional objectives, material and skills can be incorporated into the syllabus while web 2.0 provides an asynchronous platform that enhances the curriculum.  Since all the implementations are web-based, the material can be easily incorporated into on-line and hybrid courses.

The authors will share their experiences incorporating Web 2.0 and discuss the benefits and challenges in both the collaboration and institutional support for their work.  This will include issues of infrastructure, institutional policy and union contracts as they impacted the research and implementation.

This poster session will include assessment data, student feedback, anecdotal evidence and exemplary student submissions that will be shared with the audience.
